Essentials of wire walking speed in wire EDM
In WEDM processing, wire walking speed refers to the speed of the electrode wire moving on the workpiece, which is one of the key factors affecting the processing efficiency and quality. It is one of the key factors affecting the processing efficiency and quality. Mastering the appropriate wire travel speed is crucial for realizing high-quality WEDM processing. The following is a detailed analysis of the main points of wire cutting processing wire walking speed.
1. The selection of electrode wire is a prerequisite for the optimization of wire walking speed. According to the different hardness and thickness of the material, the corresponding diameter of the electrode wire should be selected. Thin wires can provide higher precision, but are easy to break, while thicker wires are more stable, but less accurate. Therefore, when selecting an electrode wire, one needs to weigh precision and stability.
2. Next, the wire travel speed of WEDM is closely related to the tension of the electrode wire. If the tension is too low, it will lead to excessive vibration of the electrode wire in the process, affecting the dimensional accuracy; if the tension is too high, it will make the electrode wire too taut, increasing the risk of wire breakage. Therefore, reasonable control of the electrode wire tension, so that it is within the appropriate range, is to ensure the basis of good walking speed.
3. Further, the wire-cutting speed is closely related to the discharge parameter setting. The size of the discharge current is directly related to the material removal rate, while the pulse interval and pulse width affect the formation and maintenance of the discharge gap. Typically, an increase in discharge current will result in a faster removal rate, which in turn allows for a relative increase in wire speed to improve processing efficiency. However, this should also be combined with the material characteristics and electrode wire condition to set comprehensively, to avoid over-discharge caused by wire breakage or burns.
4. The wire travel speed of WEDM is also affected by the flow and pressure of the working fluid. The working fluid is responsible for cooling the discharge area and flushing away the processing products. If the flow rate is insufficient or the pressure is inappropriate, it will affect the discharge effect and the cooling of the electrode wire, resulting in unstable processing. Therefore, the supply of working fluid should be adjusted according to the specific processing conditions to ensure adequate cooling and cleaning effects.
5. The stability of the WEDM machine tool should not be neglected. The accuracy and dynamic response of the machine itself determines whether the wire walking system can run smoothly. If there is vibration or drive system instability, even if other parameters are properly adjusted, mechanical problems will affect the uniformity of the wire speed and machining accuracy.
6. Programming strategy is also an important aspect in determining wire EDM traveler speed. Reasonable planning of the cutting path, the location of the introduction and exit points, as well as the transition arc, etc., can reduce the electrode wire of the rapid stop and start on the stability of the wire, while avoiding the occurrence of localized over-cutting or failure to cut through the situation.
